The subject is bowels.  Now, I know this isn't a pleasant subject but it is a very important one.  In fact, it's so important that your life could depend on it.

Did you know that chronic constipation affects between 9% and 20% of the US population?  And did you know that those with chronic constipation don't realize they have a problem?  Many medicate themselves with over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and don't seek medical attention.

Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) is very serious.  A study done June 2020 describes CIC as a "highly

prevalent disease."  It also states that 3 out of 5 people with chronic constipation do not even discuss their constipation symptoms with their doctor.  Instead, they use over-the- counter (OTC) therapies/medicines to try and ease their discomfort.  But this can make things worse.

Until after having back surgery in 1994 I don't remember having chronic constipation.  But after back surgery, it became a real problem for me.  Looking back I can see that all the cortisone, pain meds, muscle relaxers and all the medicinal drinks for tests did a number on me.  To make matters worse, no one who was treating me ever asked me about my bowels or elimination or I had any problems with it.  Needless to say, I was a mess back then and after all the research I've done after having breast cancer in 2004, I don't wonder why my body became a prime target for cancer.  As resilient as God created our bodies they can only be abused for so long before succumbing to disease.  But here's the thing.  Back then I didn't realize I had a problem with chronic constipation or that all the meds I was putting into my body needed to be eliminated and here's why:  I thought constipation was the absence of the urge to eliminate so I thought that if I didn't have the urge to eliminate I wasn't constipated.  How silly is that?  And because my medical doctor back then told me that eliminating once a week, if that, was "normal for me"  and I believed and trusted him.  If only I knew then what I know now.

To illustrate why constipation is dangerous and why daily elimination (and multiple times) is so important let's imagine you're making sausage.  You're stuffing ground meat into the casing (casings are usually made from the digestive system of an animal like the small or large intestine or stomach.  However today artificial casings are also used which are made from cellulose and collagen according to the American Meat Science Association).

So how much meat can you stuff into the casing?  First, let me explain something about casings.  Casings have elasticity which is why they are used in make sausage and other food products like hot dogs.  But if you stuff and stuff and stuff and stuff the meat into the casing without stopping the casing will get weak and start to lose it's elasticity.  Eventually it will tear and rip open.  What if we remove the meat just before it rips open?  Will the casing go back into it's original shape?  Not likely.

Now think about this.  If someone is constipated on a regular basis and they eat and eat and eat without eliminating, their bowel will lose its elasticity and get weak just like the casing.  If this continues, eventually the bowel can tear and burst open, a very serious matter.  As the associate doctor to my doctor told me many years ago, my bowel could burst, poison my body and I could die!  He didn't "say" this to me, he yelled at me because at that time I had not eliminated in about two weeks!  But because the other doctor didn't think it was a big deal for me to eliminate once a week, I didn't see any cause for concern, though I was very uncomfortable.  So that's what can happen with our bowels.  It's not something many people like to talk about but as we can see it's very important and it's a big problem for many people.  Many people suffer in silence, like I did.

So what can you do if you have chronic constipation?  The first thing I suggest is CHANGE YOUR DIET!  This subject is for another day but for now, here are a few things you can start doing now:

  1. Eat nutrient-dense foods like fresh organic produce, raw and cooked.  Besides nutrients, fresh produce also has a good amount of necessary fiber or "roughage" as my mother always used to say when I was younger.

  2. Drink more water than you are currently drinking.  If you're not drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day (about 1/2 gallon) then you're not drinking enough water.  And be sure the water is not directly from the tap.  Though the government has legal limits for contaminates in our drinking water, remember that "legal does not equal safe."  Watch this video from EWG's website.  You can even type in your zip code to see what's in your tap water.

  3. Get moving!  Yes, call us if you want to move and/or buy a home, but also move your body.  Do some exercising, walk, ride a bike, stretch your muscles, dance, etc.

  4. If you're still not eliminating at least once or twice a day (3 times a day, 20-30 minutes after a meal is optimal), then I personally recommend Dr. Schulze's Intestinal Formula #1.  Once on his website, scroll down a bit and enjoy Dr. Schulze's video called, Doc Talks:  Elimination. He's a real character!  Like Dr. Schulze says, Formula #1 is "#1 at fixing #2."  I agree and so do some of my good friends!
